ReplyDeleteManaging Working Relationship
It is important to manage working relationship with your boss as it is to manage subordinate. If the relationship is rocky, neither the boss nor the subordinate can do their jobs effectively. The responsibility of the relationship should not and cannot lie entirely with the boss. It needs two hands to clap!!!
Misreading the boss-subordinate relationship
- Two people can occasionally be psychologically and temperamentally incapable of working together. This is what we call personality conflict.
- Some people behave as if their bosses were not very dependent on them. They fail to see how much the boss needs their help and cooperation to do his or her job effectively. These people refuse to acknowledge that the boss can be severely hurt by their actions and needs cooperation, dependability, and honesty from them.
What have I learnt?
- I need to have a good understanding of other people as well as myself. Especially so in terms of working style, strength, weakness
- Use the info to develop and manage a healthy working relationship, one that is compatible with both persons' work styles assets
IPW stands for inter-disciplinary project work. It seems like a large percentage of schools are putting in more effort in promoting inter-disciplinary learning nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI'm the second-in-charge for Sec 1 NA IPW this year. Our theme is on mangrove - more than just mud and mozzies. The idea of having an IPW week is refreshing and interesting to most of the Sec 1 NA students. It breaks away from their usual class routine.
IPW allows students to understand a subject/topic in depth not through individual learning but through team work. Through brainstorming, research and discussion, it allows students to see things from different perspectives.
The feedbacks from the students were positive and encouraging. They enjoyed the team-building games, group-work, video project, sungei buloh trip and many more. They explored and understood more about the plant life and animal life in the mangrove. And learnt about the rich diversity of life on the harsh conditions of the habitat as well as to appreciate the importance and usefulness of the mangroves.
Most of the groups were very focused and able to meet the deadline for the submission of the video products.

Learning Journey to Bedok Green Sec on 9th April 2010
ReplyDelete(Sharing session on mathematics achievements in GEO O and N level exam)
The entire mathematics department went to Bedok Green to learn more about about the contributing attributes for their maths results to achieve valued-added at last year 2009 GCE exams.
Bedok Green math's department focuses on the following:
1) Producing quality student's results (value-added) in Maths and A-Maths
2) Improving teachers' knowledge and pedagogical skills
3) Modelling and instilling the values of diligence and determination to students
I feel that the formulae behind the success in their school's maths results are as follows:
1) Target Setting and Close Monitoring
- High expectations and beliefs that every student can achieve
- Reflections and follow-up actions by teachers and students
2) Teaching and Learning Strategies
- Retest policy (making sure one topic is well-mastered before proceeding to the next)
- Teaching and learning are geared towards exam
- Small group banding with smaller teacher to student ratio
- Structure revision is planned for all students
3) Dedicated teachers
- Deployment of teachers to graduating classes is based on teachers' competencies
- Whole-department approach to achieve the value-added results
- Stability of the graduating teachers
Suggestions - (PYSS)
1) Graduating teachers should be relieved of other duties and channel all their focuses on the graduating students in semester 2
2) Engage stable AJTs for graduating classes
3) Intensive drilling of TYS which should take place now!!!
4) HOD should address the graduating students (by streams) regularly and motivate them so that the message of 100% passes in mathematics is impressed on them
5) Greater mental and emotional support for teachers (they are not alone in the battle for achieving value-added results) Lots of encouragements for the graduating class teachers and don't doubt their capabilities (Belief: All teachers are good and qualified!)Only then will teachers commit themselves whole-heartedly to achieve for the department.

Good Leadership in Schools
ReplyDeleteThere is a great emphasis on good leadership in schools. The schools need to have visionary, inspiring, innovative and dedicated leaders. They have to lead and inspire their staff to achieve the desired outcomes of education. The school leaders are given ample opportunities to develop their leadership capabilities. At the same time, they are stringent processes in place to evaluate and assess their leadership.
