  1. Last Monday, I spent some time with the 511 comparing their Term1 Maths marks with the expected target. They were really interested to know how well they have done compared to what is expected. Last year their results were usually not good as they were doing the express maths. But this year, it is more manageable for them. But I do feel that going through with them on their targets and performance encourages them to do better and gives them a sense of direction .Their Term 1 marks were good this year and many have done above expectation .Though I feel the tests set were easy (they know it too), it gives them a sense of achievement. And this makes them determined to do better or at least keep up with their grades. I could see that in their expression. Usually, they are lethargic and easy going. But on that day, they were keen to know what the homework is for that day and when to hand in. I do hope it was not only for that day.

Often, I do not have enough time to finish the syllabus and thus do not have time to show them their targets and results. But I do think it is worth to spend some time during the lessons to discuss with the class on their performance against their targets.

  2. Yesterday, during morning assembly, some pupils (I think they are from the ELDDS) put up short skit to show the difference between the words ‘fetch’ and ‘bring’. I thing it is a good idea to teach the students the difference in these words. Sometimes when pupils come to borrow broom to sweep their classroom, they use the word ‘lend’ instead of borrow. They really do not know the correct word to use. I hope there will more of these during the morning assembly. The Values for Breakfast have been going on for a long time. I’m not sure if the pupils are really listening to the stories anymore. Initially, they used to. Instead, of having Values of Breakfast everyday, maybe it will be more interesting to have a variety of programmes in the week. The students were attentive during the skit because it was change from the usual.
