  1. This week is the IP week for the school. I have done similiar stuffs when I was at Chai Chee for my contract teaching.I believe that safety will always be the first priority when following students out of school

I have the chance to bring class 512 to PP park for CIP beach cleaning. There is also a class bonding session for the class after the cleaning session. It is a nice trip there.Looking forward to the other trips for the coming week.

It has been a welcoming 1+ weeks at PY. The start of a new surrounding has always mark a challenge for most people including myself. There are always uncertainty, expectations and many mixed feeling. One thing that I have learnt from the many new surrounding that I have encountered is to start work with the correct mindset while trying to understanding and get use to the culture.

I need to think of the Elearning lesson too.

Last week has been the IP week for the school. Very interesting week for the students and myself.
Very important things to take note of when bringing students out of school in school uniform. People can complain about anything under the sun about the students. Therefore as a teacher, one needs to be alert of the possible outcome of the students' actions. It may look harmless to many but to a few, the actions may not be welcomed.
Was able to go through some articles on Polyna's method of teaching. Have some ideas of how to use them in my teaching. Will have to try them out to see how is the response from the class.

Have been an eventful two days to start the week. On Monday, I was given a chance to teach CPA with 322. Mr Lai was in the class too and was helpful that he was able to give me some feedback on my teaching.
During the Maths department meeting, it was interesting that the keying of marks was demostrated. Another key point that was brought up during the meeting was the marking of papers. We were reminded crossing out the space on empty blanks in test paper. I feels that even as there are a lot of tasks at hand to complete, there will always be small detail that one has overlooked so it is important for teachers to share common possible errors or loopholes.
Today, I managed to have a chance to observe Ms Vicky's class for 221. It was a different experiene for me to observe a differnt person. This observation really make me understand the importance of classroom management.
Ryan also came into 221 to talk to the class while he passed by the classroom. I feels that I was able to see the use of RP in action by Ryan.
We will be having the Sports Meet tomorrow. Looking forward to the event.

Have been an eventful week 1. The start of my actual teaching. On Monday, I have my Maths class with 211.The lesson was on congruent figures. For the lesson, i wanted to use power point for the lesson. I felt that because of the terms that I used, I have confused the students on the concept of the corresponding angles and sides. I have to spend extra time to clarify the confusion that I have caused.
Feedback that I got for these lesson.
    - I should have used 1-2 examples to expand the concept from there instead of keep using a different example.
    - Using only power point to present the lesson was not very effctive as it is hard for the student to follow the train of though no matter how I try to show all the steps.
-The flow of the lesson is not very smooth. I should have a smooth transtion when I gives the students the examples. It is important to pace the examples accordingly to the class.

It was the second lesson with 211 for the week. It also happen to be the day my sup from NIE came down for my first observation.
    Problems that I encountered.
Firstly, I did not realised that the class have to go for medical check up so I have to wait in the classroom with my sup for 40mins. When the boys are done with their checkup, I have to start the lesson with only the boys.
Secondly, I have wanted to use some powerpoint for the lesson but I was not able to get it to work properly onto the projector. In the end, I used the visualizer to project the screen of the laptop.
    A few plus points.
-The class was quite well behaviour for the lesson. Everyone brought their books for the lesson.
    - The class reacted quite well for the lesson. They are very responsive to the questions that have been posed to them and they are willing to try.
    FeedBack for the lesson.
-I should have proved the similarity of the figures with the properties of similar figures instead of getting them to observe visually.
-During the course of the lesson, I have give the classes a few different examples with scale factor of 2. At 1 point, i realised that the student thought that the ratio of the corresponding sides of the similar figures is 2 instead of a constant.Need to take note of these details when I planned my lesson.

Today was my first lesson with 111.I tried to use the white board and visualizer for the teaching instead of the normal powerpoint that I normally used.
    Plus point
-Some of the students are very helpful and are willing to try out the questions or the examples that have been assigned.
-With the whiteboard, it is easier for me to show some stuffs that the students asked on the spot.

    minus pts
    - the lesson delivery was quite bad. I did not manage to expand on the definition of percentages.
    - there was plenty of writing which is slower.

    Feedbacks
-I need to take notes of what the students have been taught in primary school and use the concept to expand from there.
-I need to take note of the students going to the toilet. Should not let more than 1 student leave the class.
-Need to look for more resources to get more ways to improve on lesson delivery.

A few key issus from today's lessons and Maths meeting.
-I need to ensure that I get the attention of the whole class before I continue to teach the lesson or else it is pointless.
-I tend to speak too fast.
-Important to scaffold well during the lesson
    - Still need plenty of improvement on lesson planning.
-I like the way the tuning protcol is conducted. Always valuable to get feedback from so many people.
-Need to explore more on USER worksheet that Ms Pow used during her tuning Prot.

Have been a week that I need lots more improvement. I have realised one important point. It does not matter whether one does a lot of reflections, the important thing is that after the reflection, I must think of the solution to try to improve on the situation. The coming week will be one that I'm looking forward to. With so many things to clear up, I will want to see whether these "solutions" will be good enough. Before i forget, i will remind myself that there is no point thinking and working on a lesson plan if I do not follow it closely. I have decided to make my lesson plan to be like a instruction manual and will stick to the plan. I am also thankful that people around are being frank and direct. Will see how the lesson turn out on Monday and improve from there.

I have my 211 class today. There is + and - pts again.
Starting with the +pts.I find it slightly easier when I list out the steps on how I want to deliver my lessons. I also manage to follow quite closely what I want to deliever. Since I started to include all my steps and workings in my lesson plan, the lesson planning process has been very slow but I think it is worth it. More improvement is needed but definitely clearer of what I am trying to do.
-pts: Need to push harder on my classroom management. Also need to be more steady when situation pops up.
Today, Maths Dept did a tuning protocol. Vicky shared with us on her lesson. Very interesting things to take note of. I like the way she do up her presentation with interesting fonts and layout. Pleasant look. I also like the way she highlight the key part of the presentation to the students. I'm looking forward to my TP 2 weeks from now.
Malek informed us to think about what we can put in place as check points for our students to become problem solvers.Personally, I like self directed learning on the students' part. I think we can try to assess the students via simple learning point after self-directed learning as they try to discover the concept. The problem I see in this may be the problem that the students may not be able to express themselves in the way they want to share their experience.

  10. This week have been one that needs me to following my plans closely. I do feel some improvements in lesson delievery. The good part is that I managed to see students trying to understand or figure out some of the concepts that I am teaching. This is quite encouraging. There are still some points that I need to take note of. One big problem is that I need to improve on my time management. During the AR meeting on wed, it is an interesting session. Get to know some of the process and way to test the validity of a test.
Going to Bedok Green tomorrow. Looking forward to see what I can learn. :)

  11. Lots of things have happened.
First, the trip to Bedok Green sec. Always interesing to share and learn about how do others approach a similar task. Good learning exp for me. BGS has some interesting features
    1. They prefer that the students set a high target for themselves. When they say high I mean A1-B3. I think there is pros and cons. Pros are that this helps students to be working harder and also avoid students to be over confidence.
Cons are that some of the students may be affect by the target and since they cannot reach it, they will not strive for it.
I think a better way is to set a reasonable target for the students then up the target by a grade or 2.
    2. I like the small group banding of the students. They always the teachers to be able foucs on the different band with different requirments. But banding will also means that more manpower will be needed if classes of the different band are to be conducted concurrently.
Generally, It was a good trip. Hope to have more chances to do it next time.

  12. There was an observation on Mon.
Some lesson learnt-I need to peak my lesson base on the students. Need to get the students to understand instead of using terms that the students find it hard to understand.
I also realised an important feedback. I tend to be very rushy when I knew I was under the plan.I need to learn to be more relaxed and foucs on the teaching.
The nets that I made for the lesson was also too small.Have to take note of the error i made.

I have class with 111. I felt that it was one of the better lesson I had with the class.Ii felt that the use of GSP in class to demo the angles and the properties was good. Seem that most of the students were quite curious but the software. It also allows the students to see the properties that i am trying to show easily. I am also glad that most of the students were able to make use of the properties to solve the examples given.
    Points to improve
I should have increased the font size more. I felt that the font size may be a bit small for the students sitting at the back of the class.
I also felt that I am getting slightly better on the class room management with this class.

One advise that really help is that I need to be more relaxed and don't worry about slowing down the pace. I felt that I tend to get panicky when I realised that I am off pace for my time management. It really helps that I have to constantly remind myself to be more relaxed.

Did my class with 211 today. My NIE sup came to observe for this lesson.
I did group work with the class. It was an interesting experience. Need to consider a lot of factors when it come to group work.
    for example
    -role for the group members
-whether they can explain to the class on their working.
-I think the standard of the questions need to be considered well too. If the questions is too tough for the students, it will be hard for sharing.
-The material used for the lesson need to be big enough to be seen easily.
-Time managmenet and clear instructions are very important.
All in all, I think it was a good experience to do group work. There are things to improve but also I was pleased with how some of the things turn out.

  15. Protocol tuning
I have my protocol tuning today. very interesting on how teaching a concept can be done so many ways. The teachers gave me a lot of feedback. Even for something as straight forward as how the lesson such start. For example, I followed the textbook way of teaching triangle before polygon but there was a good point of why not polygon before triangle.
There were also points on getting the students to measure and discover the exterior angle by themselves instead on showing them.
When it comes to how the questions are given to the students, it may not be too good an idea to test them on too many concept on 1 go.
There were also some encouragement on stuff sure as the table to let the students explore on the different properties of the quads.

  16. Just some updates
Felt that lessons were better. When rapport with the class is improving, it is also easier to get the students to try and accept things more easily.
This whole incident in school so far have allowed me to learn a lot of things. I also see some things differently now compared to the time I started this career.
No matter how the outcome will turn out in the end, I felt that I have benefitted from my time here. I am thankful to many who have helped me in any way.
I will be bringing my class for an ICT lesson tomorrow. Will be looking forward to it. Have always like the idea of students exploring and learning by themselves while the teacher is there to reinforce the learning process.
Another meaningful feedback....Sometime, something simple is good for the students...The ICT lesson really shows that. Working on the lesson really make me think of the simplest way to get the students to learn and understand. I have to pretend that I am not with the students at the lesson, so what is the easiest way for the students to understand without the teacher explaining to them.

  17. Completed my ICT lesson yesterday. In general, the students enjoyed it. I felt that majority of the class tried to go through the slides and understood the 2 concept that I want them to learn.
Some points that I need to take note of.I have some problem with the software compaliablity problem. I have used PowerPoint Vista to complete the slide while the school is at PowerPoint 2007. The slides was ok but some of the fonts and features of the slides were lost after I convert the file to suit the older version.
This bring me to a point to think about if this lesson was a home-based lesson, there may be problems such as whether the students will have the software to open the file. I have make an assumption that everyone have PowerPoint which may not be the case.
I think I will look into presenting the lesson on the browser instead.
Secondly, I felt that the worksheet that I create can include more pictures for the students to visualize. The topic was on polygons so some of the students prefer to see what a octagon look like.
Was a interesting experience for the class and myself. I see how I can make use of these mistake to improve on the next ICT lesson.
